The Images of the Scare School

We use a lot of images and symbols in Scare School to teach principles. Here are some of the main images and what they mean.
Brainseeds is both the name of our publishing company and the name of what we are trying to plant in your head. When we started teaching we realized we wanted to plant ideas rather than teach steps. We want to teach you to fish; rather than feed you one. Many of our teaching goals stem from the quote
"The mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns to its original size." -Oliver W. Holmes

The Five Laws of FEAR are:

Remove the Comfort Zone is the first of the 5 Laws of Fear. There are many ways to remove the comfort zone. The man in the circle is to remind us to think of comfort zones in all directions and distances, and to remove barriers that make your victims feel safe. (Dont' confuse feelings of safety with actual safety)

Prey on Multiple Senses is the second of the 5 Laws of Fear. Sight is the most common sense that haunters attack. This is actually only a portion of the brain that we want to feel threatened. By attacking multiple senses we slow down the brains ability to reason through the varied fronts. Keep the mind guessing about what is a real threat and what is pretend.
Remember Sight, Sound, Touch, and Smell. (not many haunts are using taste without lawsuits

Escalate the Tension is the third of the 5 Laws of Fear. The Mind games below are all deeper lessons in this law however the simple steps are to Foreshadow Escalate And Resolve.

The 3 Mind Games (which are part of Escalate the Tension) are represented by Music Magic and Warfare.

Music is the lesson of Foreshadowing. The musical theme used in a movie (think Jaws or Darth Vadar) lets us know what is coming before we ever see it. Foreshadowing (which can be done several ways) is critical in order to get into their heads.

Magic is the lesson of Misdirection. All magic is based on focusing the eyes on the decoy so that the magician can trick you. All effects in haunted houses are best used as decoys. Control where your victim is looking so you can get them from another direction.

Warfare is the lesson of Deception. Once you have your victims attention, attack them where they are least prepared.

Distinguish between Gory and Scary. A good cheescake is good without much cherry filling. A good haunt doesn't need as much gore as one might think. Blood and gore only prey on the sense of sight. People are more afraid of the unknown and surprises than by splatter and gore. Most people are more scared by what they imagine than by what they see.

Synergy is the fifth of the 5 Laws of Fear. It is the principle of combining all the laws. It is also the princple of combining actors and effects toward each scare. The mind can process a single threat quickly but struggles when multiple threats are presented at once.
